MFL

Intent:

At Wilbraham Primary School, French is taught as our Modern Foreign Language to engage, stimulate and encourage our pupils` curiosity around languages and language learning and to stimulate their interest in other people and cultures.

French is our chosen language as France is a neighbouring country to the UK and is widely spoken around the world. Through the teaching of French, pupils will recognise the role of French in our multilingual world, stimulate their interest in French culture and understand that there are many links between French and English words. Many of our pupils are speakers of other languages in addition to English and will be encouraged to compare their home languages to French, too.

Our MFL curriculum will aim to develop each pupil`s ability and confidence in understanding and responding to others, in communicating for practical purposes, and in expressing their ideas both orally and in writing. Their learning should provide them both with a strong foundation to build on in learning languages at key stage 3 and a deepening understanding of the differences and similarities between people and places which we can celebrate through our curriculum.

MFL lessons are taught weekly throughout Key Stage 2 and delivered by class teachers using the Language Angels platform. These children in years 3-6 have a lesson each week.

Implementation:

We want children to feel safe in the classroom environment to learn words and phrases in French and to understand that when you are learning a foreign language mistakes aren't very important. Language is a communication tool and when you are learning a new language you do not have to be 100% accurate. If people have understood you, you have succeeded! We want the children to be confident enough to use the French they have learned in each lesson to communicate as well as they can. We want the children to have fun in lessons, to be encouraged to have a go to recall and  build on what they have learned in previous lessons and to feel successful in communicating in French.

Impact:

The curriculum is designed to:

●Ensure progression in speaking, listening, reading and writing using a metacognitive approach where prior learning is retrieved and built upon

●Develop each child's enjoyment, enthusiasm and confidence to learn and communicate in a foreign language

●Develop language learning skills

●Enable pupils to make links between their own and other languages

●Support children in becoming global citizens
