In Design and Technology we have carried on with our work on levers. The children have designed their moving pictures which must include 1 type of lever.
They will begin making their moving pictures next week.
This week in literacy we have been writing our explanation texts to explain how a volcano erupts.
Over the past two weeks we have learnt about the different features required for an explanation text, how to use causal conjunctions to join clauses, how to use fronted adverbials of time and how to make a plan for writing.
Can you tell your grown up at home the process of how a volcano erupts? Try and use some of the time adverbials in your explanation.
Ms Stapleton will add photos of our completed explanation texts next week!
In the last two weeks the children have been learning about multiplication. We have looked at the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Have a look at the pictures and complete the STEM sentences.
Have a go at playing these games so that you are really quick with your times tables.
Draw a picture that represents
6 x 5 7 x 2 4 x 10
Over the last few weeks 3S have been developing their throwing and receiving skills. In our last lesson they used these skills but included some attacking and defending elements too. I am always impressed at well they work together as a team.
We have continued our Geography work on Natural Disasters this week. Today we looked at how the Earth's crust is made up of lots of tectonic plates - rather like a large jigsaw puzzle.
We cut up the areas that have tectonic plates running through them and then tried to put the puzzle back together again.
Then we investigated how tectonic plates move and the effect this has on the Earth. We used oreo biscuits to help us! The cream in the middle represents the mantle and the top biscuit is the crust. We broke our crust into 2 pieces and then we moved them in different ways. We learnt that movement can be classified as divergent, convergent and transform.
Then we got to eat the biscuits...
We have been very creative this week in Design Technology. We have been learning about different levers. We used different pieces of card and split pins to make our simple lever. We discussed the differences between fixed pivots and loose pivots.
Have a look at some of our levers.
This week we have been learning about conjunctions. We learnt that a conjunction can link 2 parts of a sentence (clauses) together.
We sang this song from Anchor Education to remind us that different conjunctions have different meanings.
We have continued with our book - The Iron Man, this week. The children have been learning some new vocabulary that appears in the text.
We read that the Iron Man walks into the breakers, the swell, the hollow of the swell and the wavetops! This was new language to use! We had some photographs and word cards that we had to match up. It was very tricky. Once we understood the meaning of the new words we re-read part of the chapter again and it made more sense.
We have continued with our topic 'Natural Disasters' by looking closely at the Earth and the different layers. We talked about what we would see if we dug a hole and then kept on digging. The children looked at some videos and then they used different coloured plasticine to make the different layers of the Earth.
Can you remember the names of the different layers?
