It is a key priority of Wilbraham Primary School that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, whose values are built on mutual trust and respect for all. The school’s behaviour policy is therefore designed to support the way in which all members of the school can work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment in which everyone feels happy, safe and secure.
The school has a number of rules, but our behaviour policy is not primarily concerned with rule enforcement. It is a means of promoting good relationships, so that people can work together with the common purpose of helping everyone to learn.
The school expects every member of the school community to behave in a considerate and respectful way towards others. We treat all children fairly and apply our behaviour policy in a consistent way. Our policy aims to help children grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
The school recognises and promotes good behaviour, as it believes that this will develop an ethos of kindness and cooperation. Our behaviour policy is designed to encourage and reward good behaviour, rather than merely deter bad behaviour choices.
Rewarding Positive Behaviour
At Wilbraham Primary, we belive first and foremost in positive praise to reinforce good behaviour. We don't believe that there are any bad or naughty children, sometimes they just need help and support with the choices they are making. All children should have the opportunity to make a fresh start.
Children are often sent to the Headteacher and Senior Managers with work they are proud of so that we can share in their success and reward them with a sticker and lots of praise. Children also choose to see our Headteacher and Behaviour Mentor when they have behaved in a way they feel proud of; they may have helped another child, walked away from a confrontation or tried hard to improve their haviour. It is vital that these positive choices are rewarded so that children will continue to try and make the right decisions.
Strategies for Behaviour Issues
Occasionally, staff in school will need to help settle conflicts between the children. In those situations, our Behaviour Mentor, Ms Toft, will play the role of mediator rather than judge. All the children are given the opportunity to speak and tell their side of the story before we decide together what the outcome should be.
For more serious incidents, we consider asking parents/carers to come into school for a meeting to discuss how we can best help their child. The approach used at Wilbraham Primary is always completely individual to the child. Some children respond well to having a behaviour monitoring book/chart, some need reassurance and guidance about the choices they are making and some need help with calming down techniques, etc.
Our Behaviour Mentor
Our Behaviour Mentor, Ms Toft, is always available for any child to speak to during the school day. Ms Toft is based in the Castle in the old building and the children know they can go there to calm down, have a chat, let off steam or at times they may be sent there for a time out.
At lunchtimes, Ms Toft uses the Castle for 'Chill out Club' for the Year 6 children, however other children are often allowed to attend after a discussion with Ms Toft. Some children will go there to socialise, some go there because they find lunchtimes challenging and some just go now and then because they feel like doing something different.
